Bird's Opening starts with 1.f4, controls e5 from the flank and leads to positions resembling a Dutch Defence with an extra tempo. The measurement shows the cost of that tempo: the position after 1.f4 is −0.18, and White gives up the first-move edge. The most important practical figure is From's Gambit, 1...e5, the most feared reply, which measures +0.37 for White after 4.Nf3 — as long as White does not play 4.Nc3, which loses to mate in three.
The pawn structure this opening produces
Bird's Opening defines its structure with the f4 pawn, which controls e5 and opens the h4-e1 diagonal against White's own king. That second consequence decides From's Gambit: after 1...e5 2.fxe5 d6 3.exd6 Bxd6, Black's queen threatens a check on h4 and the bishop aims at g3, and the only move that safely shuts the diagonal is 4.Nf3. Against 1...d5, the Bird has two structures. In the reversed Stonewall, with e3, d4 and c3, White builds the f4-e3-d4 chain and gains e5 for a knight, in exchange for a locked c1 bishop and the e4 square conceded. In the fianchetto set-up, with b3 and Bb2 or g3 and Bg2, the f4 pawn works as in the Leningrad Dutch: it holds e5 while the bishop presses the long diagonal. What the Bird does not allow is an early e4. With the pawn already on f4, the e4 push against ...d5 gives up the pawn and opens the king's diagonal at the same time.

Is Bird's Opening good?
It is playable, but it gives no advantage: the position after 1.f4 is −0.18. White's best measured structure is the reversed Stonewall, at −0.02. The Bird buys less-studied positions and a clear kingside plan; the price is the tempo the first move normally carries.
How to play against From's Gambit?
Accept with 2.fxe5 and, after 2...d6 3.exd6 Bxd6, play 4.Nf3, which shuts the h4-e1 diagonal and measures +0.37. The natural 4.Nc3 loses to mate: 4...Qh4+ 5.g3 Qxg3+ 6.hxg3 Bxg3. And 4.g3, which seems to solve the check, measures −0.59.
What is the difference between Bird's Opening and the Dutch Defence?
The colour. The Bird is the Dutch played by White, and the extra tempo should be an advantage. The measurement shows it is not: 1.f4 is −0.18, and the Dutch as Black measures +0.53 after 1.d4 f5. The extra tempo reduces the cost of the structure, but does not remove it.
Common Mistakes & Where Most Amateurs Go Wrong
- 01 Developing with 4.Nc3? in From's Gambit. The h4-e1 diagonal is still open: 4...Qh4+ 5.g3 Qxg3+ 6.hxg3 Bxg3 is mate. It is the trap that made the line famous, and the position after 4.Nc3 is already a forced mate. The line:
1.f4 e5 2.fxe5 d6 3.exd6 Bxd6 4.Nc3#−3 - 02 Shutting the diagonal with 4.g3? instead of 4.Nf3. The check on h4 disappears, but the g3 pawn becomes a target: 4...h5, the engine's choice, threatens ...h4 and opens the h-file against a castled position that does not exist yet. −0.59. The line:
1.f4 e5 2.fxe5 d6 3.exd6 Bxd6 4.g3−0.59 - 03 Pushing 2.e4? against 1...d5, as in a King's Gambit. The pawn falls to 2...dxe4, the king's diagonal is open and White has no compensation: −1.91. The line:
