Caro-Kann Defense: Advance Variation

Initial Moves: 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5

Strategic Summary & Main Idea

The Advance Variation is the most popular answer to the Caro-Kann: 3.e5 closes the centre and bets that the c8 bishop, which Black takes to f5 before ...e6, will become a target. The position after 3.e5 measures +0.34, and after 3...Bf5 +0.23. What the measurement shows is that the most famous plans against the bishop do not pay: the Short System, with Nf3, Be2 and Be3, measures −0.01, and the pawn attack with 5.g4 and 7.h4 −0.14. The line that keeps the edge is the simplest: 4.h4 h5 measures +0.24, and after 5.c4 e6 6.Nc3 Ne7, +0.33.

The pawn structure this opening produces

The Caro-Kann Advance gives White the e5-d4 chain and Black the c6-d5 chain, with one decisive difference from the French: the c8 bishop goes to f5 before ...e6, so it is not locked behind its own pawns. Black's plan is to complete ...e6, ...c5 and ...Nc6, attacking d4 as in the French, but with the bad bishop already outside the chain. White's plan is precisely to attack that bishop. With g4 and h4, the kingside pawns chase the bishop back to h7 and gain space, at the price of weakening White's own castled position. With h4 and ...h5, White fixes the kingside and plays c4 in the centre, the line that measures most. With Nf3, Be2 and O-O, the Short System gives up attacking the bishop and plays for the c4 break or the slower c3 and Nbd2, measured at equality. The d6 square becomes weak for Black after ...c5, and f5, where the bishop lives, is the square White wants to occupy or attack.

Typical Plans for White

  • Play 4.h4 and, after ...h5, 5.c4, which keeps the edge (+0.33)
  • Chase the bishop with g4 and h4 only with the knight ready for f4: the Bayonet measures −0.14
  • In the Short System, develop with Nf3, Be2, Be3 and O-O without expecting an edge: −0.01
  • Do not bring the knight to h4 against the bishop on g6: 7.Nh4 loses the piece to ...Qxh4
  • Do not sacrifice with e6 after g4, f3 and h4: 7.e6 measures −0.34

Typical Plans for Black

  • Develop the bishop to f5 before ...e6, which is the whole point of the Caro-Kann
  • Attack d4 with ...e6, ...c5 and ...Nc6 as in the French, with the bishop already outside the chain
  • Against h4, answer ...h5 and fix the kingside before g4 arrives
  • Against the Short System, do not bring the queen to b6 early: 6...Qb6 measures +0.43
  • Retreat the bishop to h7 against g4 and h4 and use f5 for the knight

Frequently asked questions

Is the Advance the best answer to the Caro-Kann?

It is the most popular, not the highest-measuring. After 3...Bf5 the position measures +0.23, and the Caro-Kann entry records the Classical at +0.42. Within the Advance, the line that pays most is 4.h4 h5 5.c4, at +0.33; the best-known plans, the Short System and the Bayonet, measure −0.01 and −0.14.

Does the Bayonet Attack work?

Not by the measurement. After 4.Nc3 e6 5.g4 Bg6 6.Nge2 c5 7.h4 h5 8.Nf4, the position measures −0.14. The pawns chase the bishop, but White's king loses the cover of its wing. With 8...Bh7 9.Nxh5, White regains equality (0.00), without an edge.

Why does the bishop go to f5 before ...e6?

Because in the French, with ...e6 played first, the c8 bishop is locked behind the e6-d5 chain. In the Caro-Kann, the c6 pawn supports d5 and the bishop comes out freely to f5. The cost is that the bishop becomes a target for g4 and h4, and that is the theme of every Advance line.

Common Mistakes & Where Most Amateurs Go Wrong

  • 01 Bringing the knight to h4 with 7.Nh4?? against the bishop retreated to g6. The knight is undefended, and Black's queen takes it with 7...Qxh4: −6.84. The line: 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 e6 5.Be2 Nd7 6.O-O Bg6 7.Nh4 −6.84
  • 02 Bringing the queen to b6 with 6...Qb6? in the Short System. The queen hits b2, but 7.Nc3 develops with tempo and leaves Black's queen off-centre: +0.43, against −0.01 for the main line. The line: 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 e6 5.Be2 c5 6.Be3 Qb6 7.Nc3 +0.43
  • 03 Sacrificing with 7.e6? after 4.g4 Be4 5.f3 Bg6 6.h4 h5. The pawn opens Black's king's diagonal, but White has already weakened the own kingside with three pawn moves, and the position measures −0.34. The line: 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.g4 Be4 5.f3 Bg6 6.h4 h5 7.e6 −0.34
