The Chigorin Defence meets the Queen's Gambit with 2...Nc6, blocking its own c-pawn and betting on active pieces against the classical structure. It is the most unorthodox defence to 1.d4 d5, and the measurement places it halfway: after 2...Nc6 the position is +0.52. The line that costs Black most is the main line, with the bishop exchange on f3 and White's doubled pawn, which reaches +0.87. The one that costs least is 3.cxd5 Qxd5 4.Nf3 e5, which measures +0.07 — near equality in an opening reputed to be risky.
The pawn structure this opening produces
The Chigorin gives up the c7 pawn as a defender of d5, and that changes everything. In the normal Queen's Gambit, ...c6 or ...e6 support the centre; here the c6 knight blocks the pawn, and Black's centre depends on pieces. White almost always answers by taking on d5, and Black's queen recaptures early, giving White developing tempi against it. The typical structure comes from the exchange of the c8 bishop for the f3 knight: White is left with doubled pawns on f2 and f3, with no comfortable short castling, but with the bishop pair and a centre on d4 and e3. Black answers with ...e5, which opens the game for the pieces and hits d4 with the c6 knight. If the centre opens, White's bishop pair weighs more; if it stays closed, Black's c6 knight and White's doubled pawn weigh more. It is a structure of permanent imbalance, demanding tactical precision from Black and patience from White to open the diagonals.

- Take on d5 and attack Black's queen with Nc3 or e3, gaining developing tempi
- Accept the doubled pawns after ...Bxf3 and play with the bishop pair in an open position
- Against 3.Nc3 dxc4 4.d5, push f4 against the e5 knight: it measures +1.26, more than 5.Qd4
- Do not take on b7 with the queen against ...Bxf3: 5.Qxb7 Nxd4 measures −3.15
- Against ...e5 in the centre, keep d4 supported with e3 before developing the f1 bishop

Is the Chigorin Defence playable at club level?
It is, and the measurement helps: +0.52 after 2...Nc6, and the 3.cxd5 Qxd5 4.Nf3 e5 version drops to +0.07. What it demands is comfort with active pieces and unbalanced structures, because Black almost never has the solid centre of the Queen's Gambit Declined.
What is White's best answer to the Chigorin?
The main line with 3.Nf3 Bg4 4.cxd5 Bxf3 5.gxf3, which measures +0.87 after 9...Qd6. White accepts the doubled pawns and keeps the bishop pair. The other strong option is 3.Nc3 dxc4 4.d5 Ne5 5.f4, which reaches +1.26.
Why does 4.Qb3 not work against 3...Bg4?
Because the queen leaves the defence of d4. After 4.Qb3 Bxf3, taking on b7 loses (5.Qxb7 Nxd4 measures −3.15), and the recapture 5.gxf3 Nxd4 gives up the central pawn: −0.43.
Common Mistakes & Where Most Amateurs Go Wrong
- 01 Winning the b7 pawn with 4.Qb3 Bxf3 5.Qxb7?. With White's queen far away, 5...Nxd4 hits what is left of the centre and threatens c2, and White has no defence: −3.15. Even recapturing with 5.gxf3, the position is already −0.43. The line:
