Created by the hypermodern master Richard Réti, the Réti Opening (1.Nf3 d5 2.c4) attacks the central d5 pawn from the flank without occupying the centre with its own pawns, combining minor-piece pressure with double fianchettos.

- Fianchettoing the bishop on g2 (and often on b2 too) for crossfire pressure
- Undermining Black's pawn structure with c4 and b4
- Transposing at the right moment into the Catalan or the English
