Two Knights Defense

Initial Moves: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6

Strategic Summary & Main Idea

The Two Knights Defence meets the Italian with 3...Nf6, attacking e4 instead of developing the bishop, and accepts that White attacks f7 with 4.Ng5. It is the most tactical defence to 3.Bc4, and the measurement shows the tactics favour whoever knows the order. The position after 3...Nf6 measures +0.13. Against 4.Ng5, the classical 4...d5 5.exd5 Na5 measures +0.13 and reaches −0.04 after 10.Ne5; the recapture 5...Nxd5, which opens the way to the Fried Liver, measures +1.51. And the Traxler Variation, with 4...Bc5, measures +1.09 — the famous 5.Nxf7 only equalises, while 5.Bxf7+ measures +0.96.

The pawn structure this opening produces

The Two Knights has no stable structure: it is an opening in which the centre opens within five moves and what decides is who has the more active pieces. After 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5, White trades the e-pawn for the d-pawn and keeps a pawn on d5 that cuts the c4 bishop's diagonal to f7 — which is why Black cannot recapture with the knight without allowing the sacrifice on f7. In the classical line with 5...Na5, Black attacks the c4 bishop, gives up a pawn and gains development: after 6.Bb5+ c6 7.dxc6 bxc6, Black is a pawn down, but with an active f6 knight, a half-open b-file and the ...e4 push driving the f3 knight away. With 4.d3, White avoids the tactics and the position becomes a slow Giuoco Piano, with a closed centre and manoeuvring. With 4.Nc3, Black uses the ...Nxe4 and ...d5 fork trick to trade the centre. The f7 pawn and Black's king in the centre are the theme of the sharp lines; White's extra pawn is the theme of the slow ones.

Typical Plans for White

  • Against 4...d5, take on d5 and punish the knight recapture with 6.Nxf7 or 6.d4
  • In the classical line with 5...Na5, give the 6.Bb5+ check and keep the extra pawn: 6.d3 measures −0.54
  • Against the Traxler, take with 5.Bxf7+, not 5.Nxf7: the difference is almost a pawn
  • Avoid the tactics with 4.d3 and play a slow Giuoco Piano with a closed centre
  • Against 4...h6, take on f7 with the knight: the line measures +7.42

Typical Plans for Black

  • Against 4.Ng5, play 4...d5 and recapture on d5 with the c-pawn or hit the bishop with ...Na5
  • In the 5...Na5 line, push ...e4 and drive the f3 knight away with tempo
  • Never recapture 5...Nxd5 against 4.Ng5: the position goes to +1.51
  • Against 4.d3, develop with ...Be7 and ...O-O and play ...d6 with a closed centre
  • Against 4.Nc3, use the ...Nxe4 and ...d5 fork trick to trade the centre

Frequently asked questions

Does the Fried Liver work?

It works against the wrong recapture. After 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Nxd5, the sacrifice 6.Nxf7 Kxf7 7.Qf3+ Ke6 8.Nc3 measures +0.84, and the position before it already measures +1.51. But Black does not have to recapture with the knight: 5...Na5 measures +0.13 — against +1.51 for the recapture — and leaves the Fried Liver without a target.

Is the Traxler Variation good for Black?

Not by the measurement. After 4.Ng5 Bc5, the position measures +1.09. What made the Traxler famous is the reply 5.Nxf7, which allows 5...Bxf2+ 6.Kxf2 Nxe4+ and measures 0.00. Against 5.Bxf7+ Ke7 6.Bb3, the position measures +0.96, and Black is left without the counter-attack that justified the line.

How can White avoid the Two Knights complications?

With 4.d3, which measures +0.10 and leads to a slow Giuoco Piano with a closed centre and no sacrifices. It is the choice for players who prefer manoeuvring to tactics. The other option is 4.Nc3, but it allows the ...Nxe4 and ...d5 fork trick, which measures −0.10.

Common Mistakes & Where Most Amateurs Go Wrong

  • 01 Recapturing with 5...Nxd5? against 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5. The knight on d5 is unsupported and the f7 pawn loses its defender: 6.Nxf7 Kxf7 7.Qf3+ is the Fried Liver, and the position after 5...Nxd5 already measures +1.51. The line: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Nxd5 +1.51
  • 02 Chasing the knight with 4...h6?? against 4.Ng5. The knight does not retreat: 5.Nxf7 forks queen and rook, and after 5...Qe7 6.Nxh8 d5 White is up the exchange and a pawn, +7.42. The line: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 h6 5.Nxf7 Qe7 6.Nxh8 d5 +7.42
  • 03 Defending the bishop with 6.d3? in the classical line instead of checking on b5. After 6...h6 7.Nf3 e4 8.Qe2 Nxc4 9.dxc4 Bc5, Black has traded White's bishop and taken the initiative: −0.54, against −0.04 for the 6.Bb5+ line. The line: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Na5 6.d3 h6 7.Nf3 e4 8.Qe2 Nxc4 9.dxc4 Bc5 −0.54
